I first met Jo & James a couple of years ago at James’ sister Jennie’s wedding. It’s always lovely to see families again and this was certainly no exception. An easy list of names for me to remember too, basically Jo (Bride) and Jo (me) and James (it’s all about me), James (Steel) and (Captain) James. From the outset speaking to Jo and James (it’s all about me) it was obvious that it was going to be a lovely relaxed affair, with emphasis on the food, hence their fab reception venue. Jo tells us more about the day and their plans here.
Where did your wedding take place and what made the venue special?
Our wedding took place at St Mary’s Church, Welwyn, Hertfordshire and after at The White Hart, Welwyn. St Mary’s is very special to me as it was where I was confirmed and my family have been members of the congregation for over 20 years. Welwyn is the village I grew up in and it meant a lot to me to have people that have known me and my family for years involved in our wedding.
Did you have a theme for your wedding? What was your colour scheme?
We didn’t have a theme for our wedding as we wanted a small, village wedding. We had a fuchsia pink colour scheme for the men’s ties in the bridal party, the confetti and for the cake.
Tell us about the process of choosing your dress? Was it the first one you tried on or did you change your mind numerous times?
I had no idea what style dress I wanted, so completely unexpectedly my dress was only the third one I tried on in the first shop we went to. I had expected to have to go to numerous shops before finding “the one” because I had visions of unwelcoming shop assistants and lots of styles of dresses that didn’t suit me. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I found my dress at Mirror Mirror in Islington, where everyone was friendly and welcoming and made a process I had dreaded thoroughly enjoyable. Natasha, who helped me in my appointment, had incredible knowledgeable about their dresses and which ones would suit me.
Where did your groom get his morning suit?
We hired James’ morning suit from Austin Reed. We were very wary of using Moss Bros as we know people who had had problems both with the service they received and incorrectly fitting suits. By contrast, Austin Reed’s fitting and collection service was faultless and the quality of the suits was considerably better.
Can you tell me about your flowers?
I wanted ivory or cream flowers in my bouquet so they would look more timeless in our photographs. My bridesmaid’s bouquet was a smaller version of mine. The flowers we put on the tables at The White Hart were posies sat in storm lanterns so that the flowers could easily be taken out of the storm lanterns so that our guests could take them home with them at the end of the day.
What are your wedding rings like? Did you have any other special jewellery?
We both have plain weddings bands. James’ is gold to match the gold face on his watch and mine is platinum to match my engagement ring. I also wore a beautiful “Kate” headpiece, made by Becca at Dolecka.
What was your most useful source of wedding ideas and information?
My friends were an invaluable source of wedding advice and ideas having planned their own. I didn’t go to any wedding fairs and I didn’t find the magazines I bought very useful.
Tell us about a supplier who provided a first-class service.
It’s hard to single one supplier out because we received a first-class service from so many people. However, Maria at Mirror Mirror who made the alterations to my dress, including adding the sleeves was amazing. Maria is extremely talented and my finished dress with the added sleeves looked better than I could ever have anticipated.
Do you have any advice for future brides?
Clichéd as it sounds, your wedding day really is your special day so it’s important that it’s what you want. Don’t feel under any pressure to follow with wedding traditions if you don’t like them.
What was your favourite photograph and why did you like it?
I have three favourite photographs – it’s too hard to just pick one!! I love black and white pictures, so I don’t think it’s any coincidence that they are all black and white!! The first is the photograph of us signing the register, as we both look so happy. I also love the photograph of James and I leaving the church as it shows off my dress so beautifully. My final favourite is the photograph of James and I kissing in front of the river because of our reflection in the river.
Was Studio Rochford the right photographer for you?
Absolutely! When we started planning our wedding I had no idea what I wanted in terms of my dress, flowers, cake etc, but the only thing I knew I wanted was to have Jo as our photographer. Jo was the photographer at James’ sister’s wedding and we always thought her photographs were good. However, it wasn’t until we saw some other people’s wedding photographs after that, that we realised Jo’s pictures weren’t just good, they were fantastic. We would both thoroughly recommend Jo to any couple getting married. Jo is a pleasure to deal with, a calming influence on the day and has an eye for detail to get all the important photographs whilst having a sense of humour throughout. Thank you Jo for our beautiful wedding photographs.
